Cook County Commissioner Bill Lowry (D-3rd) launched a new initiative that offers county residents free breast and prostate cancer screenings during their birthday month.

The initiative kicked off in mid-January. Lowry, a prostate cancer survivor, was diagnosed in 2019 and had his prostate removed in 2020. Three years later, at a regular appointment with his primary care physician, he had another scan done that caught developing kidney cancer, which he has since recovered from.

“But in order to get those scans done I had to go in pocket and pay for those,” he told the Herald. “It stayed on my mind that many are not able to spend thousands of dollars to really engage in preventative healthcare, to really find out what’s going on in their body.”
